ABOUT

HISTORY

ABOUT

Youkobo Art Base Camp is an experimental base where artists go beyond the usual systems and roles to make, show, and share their work. It is in a 60-year-old building near the Kyu-Edogawa River, at the eastern edge of Tokyo's 23 wards. The building was once a construction workshop. Two artist sisters, Chihiro Kabata and Yuuri Kabata, run it as their shared studio and base. Each sister has her own art practice, and they have also worked together as the unit "Chihiro + Yuuri Kabata."

For us, showing finished artworks is not the only important thing. We also care about work in progress, ideas that do not have a name yet, tests with materials and methods, and things that come from meeting people from different fields. We want to try these things in a real place. On the first floor, our gallery holds exhibitions and projects by artists from Japan and other countries. We do not limit the genre: painting, photography, installation, video, and more. Together with each artist, we think about how their methods and ideas can grow in this place. The second floor is a small artist-in-residence space. Artists who stay here make work and do research. When they want, they also show their work and meet people.

Youkobo Art Base Camp is not a commercial gallery, a museum, or a university. Because we are different from all of these, we can act without deciding the results or the form in advance. Artists invite other artists. They show their work, talk, stay, and sometimes fail. We hope this place can be where new art and new relationships grow from these small steps.

HISTORY

Our activities started in 2008 with "Dynama," an open studio at our home studio in Mitaka, Tokyo. From 2016, we continued to hold exhibitions and projects with other artists under the names "Project Kabata" and "Art Base Camp."

Youkobo Art Space in Zenpukuji, Suginami, Tokyo, is a pioneer of artist-in-residence programs in Japan. It has welcomed artists from Japan and abroad since 1988. Yuuri Kabata worked there as a staff member for 10 years. Because of this connection, on October 12, 2024, Youkobo Art Space allowed us to carry on its name, and we started a new chapter as "Youkobo Art Base Camp."

Today, based on the studio of the unit "Chihiro + Yuuri Kabata," we hold exhibitions, run an artist residency, make works with other artists, and take part in international exchange.
